Whether people know it or not, everyone has a creed – a system of belief that one subscribes to. In the Christian tradition there is one creed that is subscribed by all Christians unequivocally. That is the Apostle’s Creed. It states the basic truths that those who would consider themselves Christian believe. So why is it in the order of worship? It is a public statement of what we believe individually and corporately. It is a public statement that we are a Christian church. And particularly, it is a public statement that we do not exist in a vacuum but are part of a heritage of faith that is bigger and older than us. And this is also helpful to us to remind ourselves what it is that we believe and that we are connected to Christ’s universal church. So the confession of faith is an important order of worship that connects us to our faith and to our Christian heritage.
