English Ministry of Inland Church

Shepherd’s Corner – November 11, 2018

We thank our veterans today.  We thank them for serving our country,
for protecting the values of the nation, and for fighting on our
behalf.  Thank you for the years of your service and the effort and
energy poured into the nation’s causes.  And I can’t help but point
out that this act of thanking our veterans parallels our view of
Christ’s work.  Not equating our veterans to Christ, but the idea of
recognizing that someone served our God (perfectly when we did not),
maintained the mercy and justice of God (perfectly when we don’t know
how to balance those two), and fought on our behalf (a fight that we
could not fight) is fundamental to Gospel understanding and proper
response to our salvation.  The fancy theological phrase for this is
called “substitutionary atonement”.  So let’s be thankful for those
who served on behalf of us and especially for Him who died in our

in Him,
