Independence Day is a great reminder of freedom.  What is your
understanding of freedom?  Most people today think of it as meaning
‘free to do whatever you want’.  But actually that isn’t freedom,
that’s anarchy. Moreover, what is the biblical understanding of
freedom?  According to the bible, it’s definitely not anarchy.  We
read from our e100 readings what anarchy was like for the people of
God; Judges regularly reminded us of the moral condition of Israel by
saying “In those days there was no king in Israel. Everyone did what
was right in his own eyes.” (Judges 17:6& 21:25).  Tim Keller explains
Christian freedom is not anarchy but that it is freedom to live fully
within the boundaries which God had ordained for us. He gives the
example of a goldfish.  The goldfish can’t say, “Yes, I’m free!  Free
to do whatever I want!” and then jump out of it’s water tank.  That’s
not freedom, that’s death!  Likewise, because God created us and is
our sovereign Lord, true freedom is knowing our creator and savior and
living richly within the parameters and purposes of Him.  So let’s
understand freedom correctly, and also rejoice in the freedom from the
penalty of sin we have received through God’s gospel grace!

in Him,
