Thankful to have served Inland EM for these past 2 years. Now that
the honeymoon period is over, I wanted to remind you of some truths
about being in a church community: Idealization, Let-down, Covenant
(Jean Vanier’s book “Community and Growth”) “1. Almost everyone finds
their early days in a community ideal. It all seems perfect…. 2. And
then comes the period of let-down – generally linked to a time of
tiredness, a sense of loneliness or homesickness, some setback, a
brush with authority…. 3. If people manage to get through this
second period, they come to the third phase – that of realism and true
commitment of covenant.” We can only try so much with human effort to
keep a congregation together. It is only through the power of Christ
who covenanted with us first that keeps a congregation together.
Let’s be reminded that Christ purchased the Church with His blood.
And it is this stickiness that binds us together. Essentially it’s
this Gospel truth that is able to bind a congregation together (more
so than growing up in the same church, living in the same area,
sharing common backgrounds, etc). So I want to encourage you to never
tire of the Gospel and continue to meditate deeply on it for your
personal faith and for our community life!
